Never published in hardcover before, and the paperback has been out of print for over 20 years!
This tale takes place near the end of Doc Savage's amazing career. The tone of the story and the characterization of the characters are consistent with the later work of Lester Dent. In "The Frightened Fish", working from story notes by Lester Dent, Will Murray presents us with a story of the early Cold War, and a sequel to Lester’s 1948 masterpiece, The Red Spider, in which a more mature and emotionally sophisticated Man of Bronze tackles an international threat which resonates with today's ecologically-challenged headlines. Characters from his past reappear, and Doc Savage is tested in ways never before imagined. In the fifteen year span of Doc's career, he grew as an individual. Everyone changes and grows over …

"It's been great to formally collaborate on these estimates for the first time, and I think the result is the most inclusive and accurate picture of the market either of us has ever been able to produce."

"I'm very excited about the market model this collaboration with John has produced," Griepp said. "I've always had great respect for John's work in the area of comic sa…

DANGER GIRL
Writer:  J. Scott Campbell & Andy Hartnell
Artist:  J. Scott Campbell
IDW Publishing | TPB | $18.99 Browsing comic covers one day while looking for the trade about which I would write this column, Danger Girl caught my eye. It’s not that I recognized the writer or the artist or even that I was a big fan of Wildstorm’s stuff but the cover caught my eye for reasons that will be apparent to anyone familiar with JSC’s body of work. J Scott Campbell got his start as artist and co-creator of Gen13 and is known throughout the industry for his highly sexualized depictions of women. Andy Hartnell co-created Gen13 with Campbell and has also written Army of Darkness: Ashes to Ashes for Dynamite comics. Abbey Chase is a treasure hunter in the vein of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted video game franchise. While wrestling with a fellow plunderer in a ship that’s headed for a waterfall, she is saved by several statuesque women. Recruited into an all-female strike force to fight a modern inca…

a NUMBER ONE should be in every comics shop

Image
NUMBER ONE (Aazurn Publishing, September 2014 release, $3.99) Writing, typography and colors by Gary Scott Beatty. Art and inking by Aaron Warner.          NUMBER ONE does much more than relate the fictional story of a comic store owner as he experiences the ups and downs of owning a business over the course of 50 years. It also serves as a great summary of the changes that have occurred in the industry over those same years. In addition, it provides great insight into the challenges faced by all owners of comic shops and independent bookstores in the 21st Century, in the early days of the digital age.           NUMBER ONE is the book that recognizes the passion for illustrated story-telling that is the core driving force that keeps long-term fans of comic books coming back for more, week after week, month after month, year after year, and on and on.  It’s the book that does a noteworthy job of explaining “why we still read those things” as well as why any sane individual would try an…

First State Comic Con : Lessons learned by a part-time vendor

Image
REFLECTIONS ON THE FIRST STATE COMIC CON - - Sunday, June 29th at Mill Creek Fire Hall in Marshallton (Southern Wilmington) Delaware                    Comic Conventions are a great place to meet artists, writers and comics creators and publishers, find that book you need to complete a set in your collection, enjoy the variety of costumed participants, and talk shop with local comics-minded enthusiasts.  And, if the price to rent some table space at the Con is not too outrageous (it wasn’t) - - it’s a good place to display and sell comics.  However, you should not try to do both.  You will find that you need to stay glued to your vendor space no matter how much the traffic slows down.  Walk away to meet some of the famous guests and you could miss that one big chance to sell a stack of books.        Of course, if you are a full-time vendor making a living/business out of this hobby then you just might have enough staff to cover your selling area so that you can walk around and enjoy y…
